Rocktail Bay lodge accomodation & chalets - Zululand - South Africa
Rocktail Bay Lodge offers accomodation in chalets on stilts - adjoins the Maputaland Marine Reserve in Zululand, South Africa - scuba diving, tropical fish and the famed leatherback turtles.
Few parts of the South African coastline are as unspoilt and secluded as the area in the vicinity of Rocktail Bay Lodge - 30 kilometers of pristine and undeveloped coastline.
In addition to scuba diving and snorkeling with tropical fish,
Rocktail Bay - named after a trawler that was wrecked offshore - also offers great surf and fly fishing.
Scuba diving - South Africa
Great scuba diving is available offshore. The ocean is ideal for snorkeling in search of tropical fish. Flippers and snorkels are supplied by the lodge. You can enjoy strolls along the deserted sandy beaches and swimming in the warm Indian Ocean.
The famous (and huge) leatherback turtles come ashore at night and can be spotted laying their eggs in holes on the sandy beaches.
The surf fishing around Rocktail Bay is amongst the best on the east coast of South Africa. There is also excellent fly-fishing and swimming in the warm Indian Ocean
Nature walks through the coastal forest and grasslands, or drives in open 4x4 vehicles to Black Rock and other localities, will enthral naturalists and photographers. The spectacular Lake Sibaya is only a short drive away.
The cycad forests and the Hippo Pools can also be visited. In summer, nocturnal explorations of the beach in search of egg-laying turtles can be arranged.
Rocktail Bay Lodge - our own 'Big Five."
We have our own "Big Five" -- leatherback turtles, palm nut vultures, Buiton's skinks, lion fish and Zululand cycads.
Birding at Rocktail Bay is excellent and a large number of typical coastal species occur, including green twinspot, green coucal, grey waxbill, and purple crested and Livingstone's louries. Natal robin and the jewel-like emerald cuckoo frequent the forests, while the marshy areas are home to pink throated longclaw and rufous bellied heron. Various waders frequent the shoreline.
Accommodation is in 10 wood 'tree-house' chalets raised up on stilts into the forest canopy, each with a wooden deck and private facilities. There is a thatched pub, lounge and dining area. An inviting plunge pool also awaits your arrival.
